Thank you for visiting the Team Placid Planet Web site. (Care to take a guess at our Web master’s favorite color?)  We come from all walks of life, and our orbit revolves around common interests (obsessions for some) in cycling and triathlons. We ride and train primarily in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks and can’t complain about the scenery. Our team’s galaxy consists of the following guiding principles:

  • be safe
  • promote good sportsmanship and fair play
  • race like there’s no tomorrow
  • raise awareness/elicit enthusiasm
  • train smart/maximize athletic potential
  • serve as ambassadors for visitors to the region

Ranging from junior girls and boys to masters women and men, Team Placid Planet members are also committed to practicing social responsibility, minimizing our environmental impact, and fostering positive relations with the communities where we train and compete. Our Youth Program, inspiring the next generation of Lance Armstrongs and Heather Fuhrs, is in its second year.

Our inaugural Wilmington-Whiteface Road Race, scheduled for Saturday, June 21, dovetails perfectly with the world-class triathlon/multisport competitions for which the region is known. Read about it in the news...Saratogian, Adirondack Sports & Fitness, Adirondack Daily Enterprise

As orange and cheery as it is, our Web site is still under construction, so we appreciate your patience as we work to align the planets. We hope you will check in periodically to see what’s new. Think of it as interval training for your mind.

Scott WoodwardIn the meantime we encourage you to visit our title sponsor, Placid Planet Bicycles, and we also acknowledge and recommend our other local sponsors: Niles, Piller, and Bracy, LLC; Flowering Meadow Nursery; Lake Placid Health and Fitness Center; Scheefer’s Adirondack Builders; Graymont Materials, Inc. and Balanced Bodywork and Massage — and our bicycle sponsor, Cannondale Bicycles. Please feel free to join us for one of our training events or contact us and we will happily address your questions.

Strawberry Festival RR & Buffalo Crit Weekend  Tim Akers | 6/19/2009 at 10:42 AM

I know some of you are headed to CT for Housatonic this weekend, others are doing the whiteface challenge, and others are taking a nice break.  I on the other hand will be heading down to the Strawberry Festival RR with a buddy from Watertown.  Has anyone raced this course before?  I cannot really find anything about the race (maps, elevation profiles, nothing!).  I found something on mapmyride.com but the elevation profile doesnt give me much.
Any pre-race advice for this course for those who have done it would be great.

Secondly, the Queen City Criterium Weekend is Aug 8-9th.   This is a two day crit weekend in Buffalo with both events being held right in the city. I know it is a ways away (7 weeks) however I will for sure be heading down to it.  My parents still live in the Buffalo area and we have room for, oh 6 more to sleep?  And that is not even counting couches (I have a big big family)!   One of the crits actually has its start/finish line right outside city hall, I am pretty excited to race it.  Let me know if anyone is interested and wants a place to stay or ride down.

Ride lots,

-Tim

Thanks for making Race Weekend a huge success!  Jim Walker | 6/15/2009 at 7:36 AM
THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED TO MAKE THE FIRST ANNUAL ADIRONDACK NORTH COUNTRY RACE WEEKEND A HUGE SUCCESS!

I need to keep this short because I have been neglecting my “real job” due to the races, but wanted to get a heartfelt thanks out to all of you who volunteered for our wonderfully successful event this weekend. We could never have done it without you! The comments from racers and local residents and businesses have been almost 100% positive and a lot of that is due to the courteous, helpful, and hardworking spirit that the Team and the volunteers projected. Two excellent courses and a weatherman who was very kind to us didn’t hurt either!

I can’t begin to name all the people who were key in the effort, but I want to recognize especially Bill McGreevy, my co-director for the Wilmington-Whiteface Road Race, and his wife Paula and all their family, and Hal Schmidt, my co-director for the Saranac Lake Downtown Criterium. These guys did a massive amount of legwork with the villages, towns, counties, local businesses, and other practicalities, and let me focus on the cycling federation and the state DOT, the latter of which turned out to be almost more than I could handle (whew!). Also my wife Jill, who helped in so many ways in the months leading up to the race and on race weekend despite an incredibly busy schedule of her own. Tim Akers did wonderful work on publicity and coordinating volunteers; Jim Tyler was huge in fundraising and many other aspects of the Saranac Lake race; Ed Smith did a great job pulling the vehicles and drivers together for the road race (thanks drivers!); Kenny Boettger and Placid Planet Bicycles helped in many ways, including procuring radios and providing sweet prizes for the junior racers, and the list goes on.

But since I have work to do I’d better cut this short and just repeat: THANK YOU! We’ll be getting full results soon, which we’ll put a link to on our website, and there should be a substantial article in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise and maybe even a clip on Mountain Lake PBS! All of you who know local business proprietors who sponsored us, please thank them when you see them. We’ll be sending them a thank-you and a t-shirt soon, but every voice helps to make it known we appreciate them. And any business you can throw their way would be great too!

THANKS AGAIN!
Jim Walker

Our Race  Keith Hager | 6/6/2009 at 10:10 PM

Hey guys,  I'm looking for a ride up to Wilmington from the Keeseville area for Sat. morning.  I think I may have a couple of other guys to help out as well - my son , Chris (who has helped me put some races on back in Western NY) and an employee at the business that I manage (a man).  Is there a need for more workers and could we catch a ride? Contact Keith Hager 834-7071 or keithh7@yahoo.com or work phone 834-7140.
