About our race weekend: Team Placid Planet brought United States Cycling Federation-sanctioned bike racing back to the Adirondack High Peaks Region in 2008 with the first annual Wilmington-Whiteface Road Race, in Wilmington, New York, home of Whiteface Mountain. The course is designed to show off some of our most beautiful, remote, and challenging North Country roads to both locals and those from outside the area while benefitting the local economy of Wilmington in the early summer "shoulder season." We have been very lucky to have the businesses of Wilmington, especially the hotels and motels, give us great support in the form of sponsorships, deals for racers, rooms for our USAC officials, etc. We hope our racers will reciprocate that support and patronize the local businesses! Through three editions of the race so far, we have had steady increases in participation and a great many satisfied and complimentary racers, with almost zero complaints or even suggestions for improvement. The race course is rolling hills with one one-mile hill per 14-mile lap and a 1.6 mile uphill finish from Wilmington to the Santa's Workshop parking lot high on Whiteface Mountain. Race distances are from 12 miles for Cub Juniors (no finishing climb) to 81 miles for Men's Pro/1/2/3. The pavement is almost all excellent and there is very little motorized traffic on the roads, which makes it safe and even more enjoyable. In 2009 we expanded to two days of racing by adding the Saranac Lake Downtown Criterium in the heart of Saranac Lake, and the first two editions of the criterium have been fantastic, again with many positive comments and almost no negative ones. The race course is a three-corner, fast, fun, well-paved circuit through the business district. We are proud to say that again in 2011 as it was in 2010, the race is the New York State Criterium Championship for all adult categories. This year, thanks to the New York State Bicycle Racing Association (NYSBRA), we will be awarding not only State Championship medals but also State Championship jerseys for winners of all championship categories! In addition we have a Kid's Crit open to children up to ten, no entry fee. In Saranac Lake as in Wilmington, we have been very warmly welcomed by the local government, the Village of Saranac Lake and the Town of Harrietstown, as well as the local businesses, and are very thankful for that. As in Wilmington, we aim to put on a terrific bike race while benefitting the local economy, so please, racers, patronize the local businesses around the race course! We thank our sponsors in Saranac Lake and Wilmington and the whole High Peaks Region for their support -- we couldn't do it without them! We welcome all racers, family, friends, supporters, and anyone who wants to see some exciting bike racing! Hope to see you at our Race Weekend! We thank our race sponsors: Wilmington: Whiteface Mountain Regional Tourist Bureau; Little Super Market, Deli, and Hardware; Alpine Country Inn & Suites; The North Pole Resorts and Motel; The Ledge Rock at Whiteface; Hungry Trout Resort and Restaurant; Birch Tree Lodge; North Pole, NY/Santa's Workshop; and the Town of Wilmington.
