It's midterm exam season here in Boston, which means that instead of cramming for all of the lectures I've skipped, I'm busy scribbling races onto my summer calendar. At least I know that when they kick me out for lousy grades I'll know I have some sweet races planned for the summer!

Anyhow, I just wanted to pass along a race suggestion for any cyclist or triathlete looking for a race May 31st. The race is the Fly by Night Duathlon, on the NASCAR track in Watkins Glen. The format is an F-1 style duathlon, run-bike-run-bike-run format. Run legs are 1.75mi on the midway section of the racetrack, each bike leg is 3 loops of the 3.3 mi track itslef. Anyhow, it was hands down the most fun I had racing last season, so much fun to race on that racetrack... some serious corners with unbelievably smooth pavement, short steep uphills, and a great post race BBQ!

Anyway, here's the link to the race website,

http://www.flybynightdu.com/

Looking forward to riding with you guys soon!

Is the team meeting still on for Wednesday the 16th? By the way, does anyone ever reply to the blogs or even read them? Seems like I am the only one who is doing any communication. Let's get some rides going and start riding together!

Keith Hager

Turtle Pond Race Report

I have a new profound respect for my Placid Planet colleagues, as I participated in my first Cat4 race today. The 86 starters in today's Turtle Pond Classic was is a whole lot more then I'm used to in the 5's. Perhaps the most noticeable difference was the speed with which you could find yourself behind 40 to 60 riders, only to have to scrape yourself back to the front of the race...seemingly one hard fought space to the next. I remember after Baloon festival last year lamenting to Bill McG and the others the futility of organizing a chase group to bring in a break away, unfortunately, that was the way the race unfolded today as well. 6 guys went clear from the start of the race...never to be seen again. After the first 3 laps of half-hearted chasing it pretty much became a race for 7th place, I did my best to try and make sure I wasn't behind 50riders going into the finishing hill, which meant I had to do a bit of work on the last lap, despite my best efforts, I found myself in the wind faaaaar too often. However, I didn't have to fight around the bulk of the field to reach the finish line, and ended up 13th as of the un-official postings before heading home. I'm pretty pleased with the result...and I learned a ton. Shawn Turner finished with the leaders of the Cat5 -35 race and ended up with a 7th place finish, representin' for TPP. He attacked with about two miles out and nearly held off the field until they gobbled him with under 100 yards to go...Not too shabby for his first race (ever) and considering he's been biking less then a year. Timmy Akers ended up crashing out, in what sounds like a pretty hairy crashfest in that same field. Hopefully neither he nor his bike have sustained any lasting injuries. Looking forward to seeing you guys this weekend for B-kill. Bruce.

Turtle Pond Circuit

Was an eventful weekend! Great race and I was happy to finally meet some TPP teammates. Roads were a little iffy; wet, sandy, rough but we managed. I didn't actually go down. My buddy (who is not on TPP but i'm trying to get him to join) was the one who went down. He had some roadrash on his side and his drivetrain is pretty messed up. I dnf'ed behind him.

That climb is what really wore me down! I now know I need to work on my climbing, its just so damn flat up here in the St. Lawrence Seaway! Either way I am off for a ride! I hope you all are enjoying this beautiful day outside.

Turtle Pond

Thanks to Bruce for the props re Turtle Pond. The event was great fun and I am left feeling very optimistic and encouraged about bike racing! I must admit that I would not have managed to succeed in my two goals of staying safe and holding on the the front of the pack without the sage advice given to me by Bruce in the weeks leading up to the event. I learned a great deal from this race and feel much better prepared for the next. I don't know if Battenkill will be a possibility for me as I am still waitlisted, but I certainly look forward to our next racing endeavor! Incidentally the pre-registration is available on BikeReg.com for the Lake Sunapee Race in New Hampshire. I have registered and hope to see other PPlanet peeps register in the coming weeks!

See you all at the first team ride!?!

Great job at Turtle Pond, guys!

You guys flew the flag well! Great finish in your first race, Shawn, really: aggressive too! Bruce, that is a good finish in the 4s and you will get used to it fast. Tim, hit those hills and you'll be right there too. Great to see such enthusiasm and two new racers! Look forward to riding and racing with you all.
The first Tuesday ride will go from Jay Green at 5:30 (rollout, not arrival) on Tuesday April 22. The plan is to offer some variation this year, the standard 42 mile course plus a hill course. Non-racers are heartily invited too. We'll work things out as we go and will move to a 6pm start as soon as the daylight allows.

Jim Williams I believe started the Thursday rides last week already. They meet at the municipal parking lot on Main St. in Lake Placid (next to Balanced Bodywork and Massage, across from Mr. Mike's Pizza). I am not sure whether it is going at 5:30 or 6.

Additionally, this coming Wednesday the 23rd of April Hal and I would like to get a group together to do a handling "bump" session at Marcy Field, 6pm. Bring your mt. bike and maybe some hockey pads (just kidding) and we will practice taking bumps from each other, touching wheels, maybe some off-the-bike tuck-and-roll tumbling. This is recommended in almost every racing manual I have ever read so it must help pack riding skills and confidence. Come join us!

PR Guy Botches First Assignment...news at 11:00

In my attempt to aid the team by posting results in our local papers, I failed to notice that Jack actually lives in Plattsburgh, not Keene, as was my understanding. I sent a similar message to both the Press-Republican and the Saranac Lake Paper, which looks like this.

Local Cyclist compete in U.S.'s Largest One Day Race

Three Local Residents competed in Saturday's Tour of the Battenkill Bicycle Race through Washington County on Saturday. The Tour of the Battenkill, also known as the Queen of America's Classics, is the largest one day road race in the United States. Bill McGreevy of Wilmington and James Walker of Elizabethtown finished 9th and 38th respectively in the Men's Cat.4 Race, while Jack Piller of Plattsburgh finished 44th in the Men's Cat. 3 Race.

*Anyway, I know now what to do for next time. P.S. does anyone have any advice on this. I think any publicity is good, but if there are people that would just as soon not have their names posted...I understand that as well. my email: BruceBeauharnois@yahoo.com Thanks.

Keith Hager

Bruce Beauharnois PR Guy for Road Race Results

Hi folks, you may have gathered that Bruce Beauharnois volunteered to put out results to the Placid, Saranac Lake, and Plattsburgh papers. (Looks like we made the Press-Republican; I didn't see anything in the Lake Placid News weekly but maybe there was something in the Adk Daily Enterprise - hope so. Thanks Bruce!)

Anyway, here's what to do if you want to have your road race results released to the press -- I think we need a tri person to handle that part of it unless Bruce wants to take that on too; to me it makes sense for someone who is intimately involved in the road racing scene do that part of it, the same for tri. Volunteers? Darci, don't want to put too much on you, but...

If you see Bruce at your race and know your result, tell him. If you don't see him or, as often happens, don't know your result when you leave, email him by the end of the weekend or a.s.a.p. at erasmus1@charter.net and let him know your result and category. He will be checking results anyway, but with so many categories and especially at the big races, he might miss you. And we don't want to put out results to the press if you don't want us to. If everyone does this, we can get some good publicity for the club and Placid Planet Bicycles. Thanks everyone, and especially Bruce!

Circuit Race at Point au Roche

I will certainly do my best on the PR thing...I'll be sending info. to both the Saranac Lake Paper and the Press-Republican. I'll be posting things pretty much as fast as BikeReg lists them unless I get an email that says you'd rather not have it posted. On Saturday May 10th, the "northerners" of TPP will be doing a circuit race around Point au Roche (a four mile loop). It'll be a good way to do a short, but fairly intense bit of riding before Syracuse. I've invited most of the real strong riders from up here, (would like to get John Parks). I think it'd be a good opportunity to try and get some people that haven't done any big big races to come out and learn the basics. It will of course have to be very very unofficial because....I don't want to get sued if someone gets hurt. The area is fairly quiet during the weekends and there are only right hand turns. I'm thinking we'd do a number of small "mini-races", so that there is constant competition, numerous sprints etc.... and afterwards....perhaps a beer at the Naked Turtle or Geoffreys.

Tinman ride - Sunday, May 4th

There is a group riding the Tinman course on Sunday, May 4th at 1pm. Meeting at the park in Tupper Lake and riding from there. The more the merrier. Plus, it looks like it will have stopped raining by then.

Team Placid Planet sent 8 riders to compete in the Jiminy Peak Road Race in Mass., Saturday. Susanna Piller finished 50th in the Women's race. Shawn Turner came in 13th place in the Men's combined 4/5 Field, while Bruce Bunn finished 30th. Charlie Mitchell finished 26th in the Master's 45+ race. Bruce Beauharnois finished 2nd in the Men's Cat. 4 field, while Jim Walker and Bill McGreevey finished 19th and 54th respectively. Jack Piller had a mechanical in the Men's Cat.3 field and did not finish.

Cemetery Road. I would NOT suggest parking at the fire station, they
can be a cranky bunch. If anyone is bringing friends, family, or
anyone that wants to bring a cow bell and cheer us on, they are more
then welcome to hangout on my front lawn (the finish line for 2 of the
races). They may want to bring a lawn chair or a blanket though. See
you Saturday.
Directions: Take Exit 40 off of 87 and go East. Turn onto 9 South
(towards Pburgh). Take your first left onto Point au Roche Road.
Drive about 1.2 miles, take a left onto Lake Shore Road, there will be
a fire station on your right, take a quick right onto Cemetery Road.
Go 1.4 miles, my blue house is on the left 293. Go another .5 miles
and you're at the boat launch (ample parking). " name="message" />

The mini training race(s) will begin at 11:00 on Saturday. We will be doing 3 Races (about 42 miles of racing).

It sounds like we should
have a decent turnout. Unfortunately, my lawn is far too soft to park
everyone at my house.
Fresh off your awesome volunteer effort for our bike race (thanks so much for that, once again: I'm still getting praising comments from racers, which I will share with you soon!), we have another mission if you choose to accept it: Julie West of the Plattsburgh Rotary asked several months ago if we could help with their Bike Rodeo which they're putting on with CVPH. I am hoping we can get a good group together for that. About ten would be great. We'll be fitting helmets and running some of the rodeo stations.

It is from 10am to 1:30pm at the Base Oval in Plattsburgh. Last year we had a really good training ride afterward, led by Ed Smith on some of his favorite hills west of Plattsburgh. Maybe we could do that again, or maybe we could even have two rides, one longer and faster, one not so fast and long.

Julie West and co. need to know they are going to have bike people to staff the event so if you could let me know if you can make it by middle of next week, say Wednesday the 2nd, that would be great!

Thanks a lot, and have a great weekend!

This is to remind you about the Plattsburgh Mayor's Cup Bike Rodeo this Saturday July 12 from 10am to 1:30pm at the Oval in Plattsburgh. We helped Plattsburgh Rotary and the Adirondack Cycling Team put this on last year and it was fun and a big success with kids and parents alike.

We could really use a few more volunteers. Duties are either fitting helmets for the kids (these are donated and given out free) or running a station in the rodeo. Both are easy and easily learned, and make a big difference.

The event is from 10 to 1:30 and if you could be a bit early that would be great. I will bring bagels and cream cheese and coffee.

After the event, Ed Smith is going to lead us on a race-training ride leaving from the Oval and sampling some of his favorite hills. We did this last year and it was great fun, amazing roads! Distance will probably be 60+. I will also bring stuff for a pre-ride lunch (pb and bread and bananas, plus drinks), which we will need when Ed puts it to us!

Anyone who can attend and help let me know please. I'm trying to give the organizers a head count.

Also, the next day is the CVPH Mayor's Cup Mountain to Lake Bike Ride to benefit the CVPH Travel Fund. Start is at 7:45 at Whiteface Mt. Call Barb McDonald at 562-7913 for information.

Thanks!
August 9

Saturday August 9 at 10am is our first annual Club Championship race, which Keith Hager has done a lot of hard work putting together (in addition to having the idea in the first place!).

We hope that as many of you as possible will come out and race or spectate (2.8 mile circuit, ten laps for men, 8 for women, so plenty of opportunities to watch and cheer!).

The directions to Keith's house just off US Rt. 9 south of Keeseville (parking, and refreshments after the race) are:
Take Exit 33 off of the Northway and go north on US Rt. 9. Keith's road is the 3rd on the right - turn right - go through an "S" turn - the house is the 1st on the right (white house black shutters), 43 Cinnamon Road.

If lost, call Keith's house at 834-7071. If you have questions before Saturday, email him at keithh7@yahoo.com

Some notes on the race:
-It is a non-USCF-sanctioned event, but there will be marshals and a waiver to sign. Fee is $5, which will go to primes (prizes for leaders of certain laps) and other goodies. Under-18s need parent's signature.

-As mentioned above, the course is 2.8 miles. It's a mile or so from Keith's house. It's triangular, three corners, and all will be marshaled. One leg of the triangle is US Rt. 9, but it is fairly lightly traveled at that point. There is a fairly ample shoulder on Rt. 9 at that point and we'll probably make a rule that racers rounding that turn MUST stay right of the white line, i.e. on the shoulder, for safety. That should not be a problem with the field sizes we will have. But will announce this and other details at the start line.

-There will be prizes for top men's and women's finishers (all will start together). Keith has procured "Team Placid Planet Club Champion 2008" mugs and jersey patches for each champion, which is really cool I think. There will also be some primes for lap leaders, and small prizes (t-shirts, water bottles, handlebar tape, and the like) for the rest of the finishers. We are hopeful that everyone will leave with something. (Kenny and Julie are providing some of the prizes: thanks, you guys!)

-After the race (should be somewhat before noon) we'll go back to Keith's house for awards and refreshments provided by the club (I'm going to bring some ice-cold watermelons and beverages, including gatorade and juices and soda and water). It will be good to hang around for a little while and enjoy what we hope is some sunny weather!

Any questions, please contact Keith (number and email above) or me (873-2413, jameslwalker3@yahoo.com). And hope to see you out there on Saturday morning at 10am!

Best,
Jim

PS Thanks in advance to Keith's wife, to Scott Woodward, and to Jill Walker, who are all volunteering to help put on the race. I know there will be others so thanks to them too. Additional volunteers please contact Keith if you haven't already.

club championship

What a great day of racing! We actually had no rain! Our champion for the men is Charlie Mitchell. Congratulations to him! Our top three were Charlie, Bill Mcgreevy, and then Jim Walker. Other participants were Ed Smith, Dan Romlein (brand new member), Tim Akers, Keith Hager, and Hal Schmidt (broke a spoke and still finished well). All participants walked away with some cash and /or some prizes, donated by the club as well as Kenny at Placid Planet Bikes. Kenny donated some nice stuff (e.g. jerseys, T shirts, salsa skewers, water bottles, etc.), but the coveted prize was of course the championship mug and patch for your jersey. Charlie has taken the mug off of my desk where it looked so nice for the last week. One last thought is that there were no women who showed up. Too bad! The mug and patch is still waiting for you if any one can come with an idea how the women can do to win it. Any ideas out there!?!?

Thanks Keith and family, marshals, and participants in Club Race!

Yes, it was a really fun race Saturday -- sorry many of you missed it! The "Devil's Triangle" course turned out to be really enjoyable. It's a beautiful setting for a race, and the sun and blue sky seemed even more special because of all the recent gray weather and rain. Thanks to Keith and Penny for putting the race on, and to Jill, Paula, Mr. McGreevy Sr., Curtis, and -- I can't remember the other young gentleman's name who marshaled, sorry!

Charlie was awful tough in the sprints, winning every prime and the race despite the best efforts of the rest of us. Impressive tactics, timing, and top-end speed! It seemed like everyone had fun, and welcome to Daniel Romlein, our new club member who Tim Akers has brought into the fold. Dan is going to be a strong junior.

Thanks too to Kenny and Julie for providing some nice prizes: there was something for everyone, which was nice. We had some watermelon afterward and some good conversation and the awards, just a nice morning all around.

As Keith said, no women showed up to race, so the custom "Team Placid Planet Club Women's Champion 2008" coffee mug and jersey patch remain unclaimed. I wonder whether we could designate an upcoming Tuesday evening ride or maybe a traditional Lake Placid "loop" Thursday ride as the women's championship race? Susanna, Donna, Rosanne, Darci: anyone interested? Let me know at jameslwalker3@yahoo.com

Thanks again everybody! Let's definitely do it again next year.

Stage Race, so we've decided to concentrate on hills more the next two Tuesdays. This Tuesday, the 12th, we will ride Whiteface (weather permitting!). We'll still start from Jay Green at 6pm and will go up the valley to Upper Jay for a warmup, then up Springfield Rd. to Wilmington, regroup there as necessary, and up Whiteface. The climb will be everyone at his or her own pace of course, whether blistering all the way, intervals, whatever. All riders, all paces are welcome as long as it's understood that the group won't stay together the whole time. But we will wait either at the top (weather and blackflies permitting!) or after the descent, regroup again, and ride back to Jay. Whether you are training for the Green Mt. or just want a great and scenic long mountain climb, we hope you will come out.

Paula maybe you could let us know what your group plans to do: stay with the normal routes or do the big climb? Thanks!

August 19th hillclimbing plan to be announced, but probably East Hill, Schaeffer Hill, and maybe Styles Brook too.

Pictures from Capital Region RR

Hey everyone, great pictures from the RR this weekend!

Hope you are enjoying the very nice weather we've been having! Just to invite you to the Tuesday ride tomorrow evening. Since several of us are doing the Green Mt. Stage Race starting on Friday, we are planning an easy spinning ride on the valley road (9N) from Jay Green to Keene and back. We might go around Hull's Falls Road just to get a little extra in on a nice sideroad. Since the ride will be relatively short, we'll go at 6pm from the Green. Stretch your legs with us and enjoy a more social ride than usual on Tuesday nights!
